What Home is

Home is an adventure game developed by Benjamin Rivers and released in 2012. It is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Mac and PC (Microsoft Windows). It runs on Game Maker Studio.

The premise, in the publisher's words

A home video game console is a video game console that is designed to be connected to a display device, such as a television, and an external power source as to play video games. While initial consoles were dedicated units with only a few games fixed into the electronic circuits of the system, most consoles since support the use of swappable game media, either through game cartridges, optical discs, or through digital distribution to internal storage. As of 2025, there have been nine console generations, with the current leading manufacturers being Atari, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, colloquially known as the "big four".

How it plays

It is played from a side view perspective. Its themes are horror, mystery and science fiction. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component. There are 12 achievements to unlock.

How it was received

Home holds a critic score of 70 out of 100. That places it above 33% of the 7,527 rated adventure games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2012 averaged 70, so it scored about average for its year.

How long it takes, and what that costs

The main story runs about 1.4 hrs. Completing everything takes closer to 3 hrs, roughly 2.1 times the length of the critical path.

What you need to run it

The minimum specification calls for Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM and Graphics card with 256 MB RAM. At 2GB of RAM, it will run on essentially any working PC — that is below what a budget laptop ships with today. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
