It is the sequel to The Maze Runner, created as a tie-in to the first movie, and also by the same developer. The story is picked up right after the events of the first movie. After Thomas and the other Gladers escape the WCKD facility early on in the second movie, they eventually end up in a desolate landscape called The Scorch. Just like in the first game the player selects a runner and needs to survive as long as possible, dodging obstacles. The basic gameplay is identical to the first game, but there are several differences.
