'Can I cry?': Stalker 2 devs say its 2.0 update's engine overhaul was a nightmare—but worth the effort
Earlier this month, Stalker 2 received a massive version 2.0 update to accompany the launch of its Cost of Hope expansion. Our Joshua Wolens says that—for those of us who've been patiently holding off while Stalker 2 finds a steady footing—it's the update that we've been waiting for, thanks in large part to developer GSC Game World's Herculean undertaking of updating its engine from Unreal 5.1 to Unreal 5.5.4... Update 2.0 Back to the Zone - Major Content and Technical Update
Back to the Zone — Update 2.0 is our biggest overhaul to how the Zone looks, feels, and lives since launch. The technical work here runs deeper than usual — including a significant engine upgrade — and alongside it, we've packed in features stalkers have been asking for, over 500 bug fixes, and a few things we've been wanting to show you for a while.☢️HighlightsEngine Upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.5.4Visual Evolution Improved lighting, shadows, and reflectionsReworked the landscape and foliage to look more naturalA-life improvementsA-Life now simulates more believable behaviour — the Zone isn't one constant gunfight. It's a lonely place where life carries on by its own rules, and every encounter or firefight is the result of stalkers and mutants simply doing stalker and mutant things. In practice: living creatures now have more places to be. More campfires, bus stops, and other points of interest are contested between stalkers and mutants. Stalkers across the Zone loot the fallen all the time — not just when you're around to see it.We've also done plenty of under-the-hood work that wasn't strictly A-Life but certainly felt like it: enemies occasionally shooting or throwing things through walls, sudden overpopulation of certain areas, and dozens of other fixes. BinocularsNot one, but three types of binoculars are now at a stalker's disposal. Try FOB-45, “Yastrub,” and “Fighter” and see what works best for you in terms of price/quality. New weapons and scopesNew toys keep getting smuggled through the Perimeter wall somehow:Arev (AR), GP3A (DMR), SKP (DMR), Fora-230 (SMG).Better to try them yourself than have us explain how they handle in combat. And somewhere in the Zone, you'll even find a unique variant of one of them.Your scope options have widened too: a new x3 scope for Western-bloc weapons and a new red dot sight for Eastern ones. Customise your loadout to fit your playstyle! Oh, and offset aiming is no longer limited to NVGs. Fog mechanicAs well as reworked cloudy and rainy weather.PDA's new "Statistics" page“Custom Rules” difficultyNew places to visit in Prypiat.🛠️🐞⚡ Bug Fixes, Crashes, and Performance We did lots of work fixing “anomalies” that aren’t supposed to be here when you return Back to the Zone. AIFixed an issue when items possessed by telekinetic mutants ability were able to fly through hard surfaces.Fixed an issue when Prof. Lodochka was teleporting from the shelter during the emissions.Fixed an issue when some NPCs were unable to leave some shelters after the emission until the player came to them.Fixed an issue when an NPC was stuck in one place after being revived from a wounded state.Fixed an issue when neutral NPCs were not reacting to the surrounding combat.Fixed an issue where the lair at the Rostok location could spawn a massive amount of NPCs.Fixed an issue that caused NPC to die instantly when a player approaches the Mill location. Fixed an issue preventing NPCs at Kazkovyi from hiding during emission.UI / Controls / InputFixed an issue with the wrong naming of the effect for the "Protective coating" upgrade on the SSP-100 Survey armor.Fixed an issue where the actions for "O" and "Y" buttons were not remappable. Fixed an issue where the message about losing progress could appear after attempting to close the game from the main menu.Fixed an issue when inputs were sometimes locked after an attempt to close the personal stash.Fixed an issue when the player was losing all input after trying to use a ladder while being overweight.Fixed an issue where custom key bindings for num 1 and num 3 were not functional during the aiming.Fixed an issue where the cursor could remain on the screen after closing the PDA.Fixed an issue where the collimator sight could not be attached to the weapon using a gamepad.Fixed an issue that caused firing mode change to not work properly with certain keybind settings.Fixed an issue that caused maximum camera sensitivity to be lower than expected on DualSense controller.GameplayFixed an issue when the player would lose the ability to move in the water with the weight lower than the weight limit.Fixed an issue when the player could jump in the water and get stuck there at the Unit Pumping Station location.Fixed an issue where the player would sometimes become immune to emission.Fixed an issue when the player was losing the ability to move after looting the pseudogiant with a collar.Fixed an issue where the player was able to duplicate SD-cards with coupons using a gamepad.Fixed an issue that caused Burer to kill the player instantly on Stalker difficulty.Animation / VisualsFixed an issue when Father Valerian`s hair was detached from the head while he moved during the combat.Fixed an issue when NPC have no weapon during the weapon cleaning animation.Fixed an issue when NPC left arm was intersecting with the body after unequipping the animation for the secondary weapon.Fixed an issue when weapon draw animation would loop after equipping the weapon from the inventory while using the detector.Fixed an issue where the knife would appear while reloading and using consumables after the player was knocked down during looting mutants.Fixed an issue with the broken animation of the flashlight turning on/off after hiding several different weapons.Fixed visual issues for the Fora rifle during the player movement. 🌻 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope & Update 2.0 — All You Need to Know
Stalkers,We are approaching a massive emission! Both Back to the Zone — Update 2.0 and Cost of Hope expansion will be launched on August 20, and here is everything you need to know before heading Back to the Zone (with no spoilers). WHAT IS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: COST OF HOPE?S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is the first major expansion for Heart of Chornobyl, launching on August 20, 2026, on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5|PS5 Pro. It includes a huge new storyline that can take dozens of hours to complete, two new regions — including, among others, the legendary CNPP and Iron Forest — new and returning characters, and much more. All owners of the Ultimate Edition or Season Pass of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will be granted access to the Cost of Hope automatically. Owners of the Standard and Deluxe Editions of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl can either update their version of the game to Ultimate Edition (and get all its additional bonuses), or purchase the DLC as a separate item. Back in the day, we shared more insights on the details of Cost of Hope with our friends at XBOX — you should take a look. HOW TO START THE DLCThe expansion's protagonist is Skif, and the events unfold in parallel with the story of Heart of Chornobyl. After installing the DLC, during your playthrough of the main campaign you'll receive a signal on your PDA that will start the expansion's storyline. The DLC content is split between two parts of the game. The first becomes available shortly after leaving the Lesser Zone closer to the beginning of the game, while the second unlocks after completing the A Minor Incident main story mission. For players' convenience, we've added shortcuts to the main menu that let you skip directly to the DLC content. If you choose to use this feature, there are several options available:Select New Game → DLC Content, then choose Skip Ahead to The Cost of Hope.Early Start skips the game to the point where the first part of the DLC becomes available. Advanced Start skips ahead to a later stage of the main story, where both parts of the DLC are available.Advanced Start places you at a point in the game where several faction-related choices have already been made in the main story. Choose Advanced Start – Spark or Advanced Start – Ward, depending on your preference. This choice does not affect the DLC content. It only applies to the main game and its storyline. For players focused on the DLC, Advanced Start is the recommended option. All Update 2.0 features are available regardless of your starting point, while the open-world structure allows you to leave the DLC path at any time and freely explore the Zone.COST OF HOPE'S MAIN STORYThe factions of Duty and Freedom — enemies in the past — are now tied together by the D4 Treaty, a pact signed by every group in the Zone before the events of Heart of Chornobyl. But no pact can keep the ideological and philosophical differences in peace forever. Duty are the ones who see the Zone as a danger to humanity. Their goal is simple: destroy that danger and protect humankind from the unknown. Freedom see things differently. For them, the Zone is a gift — something humanity should explore and learn to use for the greater good. There are so many details and nuances to this iconic conflict that we even prepared a separate blog post for it. You can also enjoy this amazing story trailer!NEW REGIONS AND LOCATIONS TO EXPLORECost of Hope will introduce two new regions: Iron Forest and the long-awaited Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A region isn't just a single location. It's a large territory, each with its own hub, along with dozens of smaller locations to discover — all filled with quests and activities, dangers and mysteries. Here, let's take a walkthrough of them. There are also new places to visit outside the two new regions. Revisit SIRCAA, the iconic X-16 lab, and other new and familiar locations. We won't spoil them all, but as Skif once said — “We found a whole city that shouldn't even exist.” BACK TO THE ZONE — UPDATE 2.0Simultaneously with the release of Cost of Hope expansion on August 20, 2026, we will release a long-awaited “Back to the Zone — Update 2.0” available for free for all players, no matter the edition of the game.Back to the Zone — Update 2.0 is our biggest overhaul to how the Zone looks, feels, and lives since launch. The technical work here runs deeper than usual — including a significant engine upgrade — and alongside it, we've packed in features stalkers have been asking for, and a few things we've been wanting to show you for a while. To name a few: updated foliage and lighting, new weapons and attachments, binoculars, new custom difficulty, and much more. We described the main improvements and new features in this blog.Don't want to read? — here is also a showcase trailer! On August 20, 2026, we will also share both short and long patch notes on our website in the Patch Notes section and on the Steam page, so stay in touch for more details.SAVES COMPATIBILITY AND STARTING A NEW GAMEYou don't need to start a new game — all saves from previous game versions will be compatible with Update 2.0 and Cost of Hope expansion. However, if you played the game long, long ago, you may have missed a lot of new content and features we added during the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl update cycle. In that case, it will be beneficial to start a new game just to re-explore the Zone, though it is not a requirement.MODIFICATIONS AND THE ZONE KIT PHASE 2 UPDATEWe strongly recommend starting both Update 2.0 and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope expansion without any mods installed. Launching the updated game with not-updated mods may cause game instability and performance issues. We are closely collaborating with the most active and popular modmakers in the Zone Kit Closed Beta format, and we have given them access to the game update early so they can update their mods in advance. Some of them may even be updated on August 20, 2026.How to...

Stalker 2's imminent free update aims to make the sequel more atmospheric and less relentlessly hostile: 'The Zone isn't one constant gunfight'
You could tell that Stalker 2 was a true sequel to 2007's survivalist FPS in that it was as broken as it was brilliant. GSC Game World succeeded in delivering the seamless open world it has spent two decades striving toward, but players' exploration of Chornobyl's exclusion zone was hindered by bugs, broken quests, and more performance issues than a drunk orchestra...
