Grand Theft Auto VI launches Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — and Leonida is a lot to take in on day one. A map roughly twice the size of GTA 5's, six distinct regions, hurricanes, a returning six-star Wanted level and Rockstar's new Criminal Profile system all hit at once. This GTA 6 beginner's guide collects the 12 things that actually matter before and after you press start, with confirmed fact clearly separated from reported detail.

Before Launch: The Prep That Pays Off

1. Pre-Load From November 12

Confirmed: digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12, a full week before launch. Do it — GTA 6 is one of the biggest downloads of the generation, and launch-night servers will be crawling. The physical Standard Edition also goes on sale November 12, but be aware the box contains a download code, not a disc.

2. Clear Your Storage Now

Rockstar has not announced an official file size, so treat any specific number online as a guess. The safe move: free up as much space as you can and don't wait for launch week to find out you're short. Delete finished games now; you can always reinstall them later.

3. Pick Your Edition Before the Bonus Expires

Confirmed pricing: Standard Edition is $79.99, Ultimate Edition is $99.99, and every pre-order receives the Vintage Vice City Pack. Pre-orders have been open since June 25, 2026, and the pre-order bonus applies to purchases made before November 20 — so there's no benefit to panic-buying on day one, but don't leave it until after launch either.

Your First Hours in Leonida

4. Let the Story Tour the Six Regions

Rockstar has confirmed Leonida is split into six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. The campaign is designed as a guided tour across them, so follow the story early instead of beelining for the far corners of the map — you'll unlock context, characters and activities in the order the game wants you to see them.

5. Mind the Criminal Profile From Minute One

Reported: GTA 6 tracks your long-term behaviour through a new Criminal Profile system, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system. If it works the way reports describe, your early choices — how you treat NPCs, how chaotically you play — will follow you. Play your first hours the way you intend to play the whole game.

6. Respect the Six-Star Wanted Level

Reported: the six-star Wanted level returns, with crime icons visible on the world map. Early on, don't test it. Learn the new police behaviour in Leonida's cities first — and when a hurricane rolls in (see below), chaos on the roads gets worse, not better.

7. Watch the Sky: Hurricanes Are Real

Confirmed: Leonida has full Florida-style weather, built on an evolution of Red Dead Redemption 2's system — rain that leaves puddles and wet streets long after it passes, rainbows, localised storms you can see rolling in from a distance, and hurricanes. Weather changes how the city looks and drives, so plan long trips and chases around it rather than through it.

8. Use Ride-Share Fast Travel (and Your Phone)

Reported: you can call ride-share vehicles to get around the map — though other passengers may join, turning trips into ambient story moments. Jason and Lucia can also scroll Snapmatic, GTA's Instagram parody, during downtime. As fugitives, they can't post publicly — and neither should you expect fast travel to be free of interruptions.

How to Spend Your First Free-Roam Hours

9. Try the Confirmed Side Activities Early

Rockstar has confirmed a stacked activity list: air boats, base jumping, billiards, gyms, jet skiing, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, and street and off-road racing. Sample them in your first free-roam sessions — in Rockstar games, side activities are where the best money, gear and map knowledge usually hide.

10. Meet the Wildlife (Carefully)

Confirmed: Leonida holds 170+ types of wildlife, including 60 bird species and 30 land mammals. Exploration pays — but remember this is Florida-inspired country, and not everything with teeth is impressed by you.

11. Pet the Dogs

Reported from the Extended Look showcase: you can pet or scold dogs, and animals react to you. It's a small thing — and exactly the kind of small thing that tells you how a Rockstar world is feeling about you today.

12. Take Your Time: This Is an ~80-Hour Story

Reported: the main narrative is estimated at around 80 hours, and Rockstar has confirmed single-player has no microtransactions. There's no race. Let Lucia and Jason's Bonnie-and-Clyde story breathe, explore between missions, and save the completionist sweep for your second week.

Confirmed details above come from Rockstar's statements and Game Informer's cover-story coverage; items marked "reported" come from showcase coverage and may change at launch. We'll update this guide on day one.
