What Sons of the Forest is
Sons of the Forest is an adventure game developed by Endnight Games Ltd and released in 2024. It was published by Newnight. It is available on PC (Microsoft Windows) only. It runs on Unity.
The premise, in the publisher's words
Sent to find a missing billionaire on a remote island, you find yourself in a cannibal-infested hellscape. Craft, build, and struggle to survive, alone or with friends, in this terrifying new open-world survival horror simulator.
How it plays
It is played from a first person perspective. Its themes are action, horror and survival. It supports multiplayer for up to 8 players online, and includes co-op. Local play supports 1 players. Available modes: Co-operative, Multiplayer and Single player. There are 32 achievements to unlock.
How long it takes, and what that costs
The main story runs about 34.5 hrs. Completing everything takes closer to 100 hrs, roughly 2.9 times the length of the critical path.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for INTEL CORE I5-8400 or AMD RYZEN 3 3300X, 12 GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB or AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB. A 12GB memory requirement is demanding — worth checking before you buy, because 8GB is still common in older and budget machines. Install size is roughly 20GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
Sons of the Forest launched on 22 February 2024, within three weeks of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Balatro, Helldivers 2 and Persona 3 Reload.
Released around the same time: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Balatro, Helldivers 2, Persona 3 Reload.
