Is Region-Switching With a VPN Worth It? No.

The saving is real. So is the risk, and it is your whole library

A player in headphones at a monitor showing a world map criss-crossed with routes and regional store icons, with a large red warning triangle across the centre.

We publish the price gap between regions, so we get asked this constantly. The honest answer is that it is not worth it, and the reason is not moral.

Verified

We track what games cost in 20 countries and publish the gaps, which means we are asked one question more than any other: can I just buy from the cheap one?

You can. You should not, and the reason is arithmetic rather than ethics.

What the agreements say

The Steam Subscriber Agreement requires your store country to match where you actually live. Valve verifies this against payment method and location, and has tightened it repeatedly. Other major storefronts have equivalent terms.

This is not a dormant clause. It is enforced, and the enforcement is not a warning.

What enforcement looks like

Purchases can be reversed, region changes locked, and in persistent cases the account restricted. An account restriction takes the entire library with it — not the one game bought at the wrong price, all of them.

Weigh a modest saving against a library worth several hundred and the maths stops being interesting.

The part people miss

Payment method matters more than the VPN. Steam checks the country of the card, and a mismatch between store region and payment origin is what flags an account.

Which means the setup that actually works reliably requires a payment method genuinely from that country — and at that point you are not routing around a restriction, you are misrepresenting where you live.

What is worth doing instead

If you live in a lower-priced region, you already have the lower price. If you do not, patience is the only honest lever: most games reach their floor within eighteen months and stay there.
